Jack Phillips has been in the cake-designing business for more than 20 years. In that time, he’s turned down all kinds of custom requests—a divorce cake, Halloween cakes, anti-American cakes . . .
But after Jack declined a request to design a custom wedding cake celebrating a same-sex marriage in the summer of 2012, the ensuing lawsuit became the first time that the government ever tried to force him to violate his conscience.
Jack needed help. He couldn’t face this intense legal battle alone. He was trying to keep his business afloat and protect his family from all kinds of obscene and violent threats. Jack needed someone to stand with him—to have his back—and to help him fight.
Because you answered the call, Jack’s religious freedom has been protected.
The United States Supreme Court ruled that the State of Colorado violated Jack Phillips’ First Amendment freedom when the government punished him for operating his business according to his sincerely held religious beliefs about marriage. In other words, the court upheld Jack’s freedom to live and work consistently with his beliefs.
This is a big win—not just for Jack, but for every American who values freedom. Praise God!
We must build on this victory—and keep the momentum moving forward. We cannot become complacent.
Opponents of religious freedom are protesting the Supreme Court’s decision and looking for ways around it. We must be ready to defend their next target—people like Jack who cannot face these battles alone.
Your gift today will show opponents of religious freedom that we will not give up the fight. With your help, we will continue to defend religious freedom for all Americans who want to peacefully live and work consistently with their deeply help beliefs.
