Sewell v. The City of Jacksonville

Last Updated 7/21/2022

Summary

Jacksonville, Fla., agreed to scrap a restrictive noise ordinance after ADF attorneys filed suit against the city on behalf of a man silenced for speaking on a public sidewalk. After Rev. Wesley Sewell, a Christian, attempted to share his faith with passersby using limited amplification - a single 10-inch speaker - a local police officer approached Sewell and informed him that he was in violation of the city's noise ordinance because he could be heard more than 10 feet away.
