Supreme Court of the United States

Maureen Rigo/Supreme Court officials

Last Updated: 6/2/2020

A U.S. Supreme Court police officer stopped Maureen Rigo, a Christian teacher, her students and two other adults from praying quietly and peacefully outside the court complex. Rigo and the other participants stood off to the side of the bottom of the Supreme Court steps, bowed their heads and quietly prayed. The officers told Rigo and the rest of her group that their actions - which did not include demonstrating or obstructing traffic- that their prayer was stopped because it violated a statute barring parades and processions on Supreme Court grounds.
