BLOGA Win in This Case Puts Us Another Step Closer to Defunding Planned Parenthood

By Maureen Collins Posted on: | March 15, 2019

It’s only March, but Planned Parenthood’s year is off to a bad start. Praise God!

The nation’s largest abortion business now stands to lose millions of dollars in federal funding after the Department of Health and Human Services published a regulation in February that closed a loophole Planned Parenthood has exploited for years. And the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit just rejected Planned Parenthood’s challenge to Ohio excluding it from access to state funding because it performs abortions.

But what happened a month earlier really caught my eye.

In January, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit not only ruled against Planned Parenthood in a dispute with the state of Texas, it also destroyed one of the organization’s false talking points.

Do you remember those gruesome undercover videos of Planned Parenthood executives selling the body parts of aborted babies? They certainly made my stomach churn. Well, when David Daleiden and the Center for Medical Progress released those videos back in 2015, Planned Parenthood’s only defense against the footage was to repeat over and over again that the videos had been “deceptively edited.”

But in a decision back in January, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit rebuked Planned Parenthood’s worn-out defense. In the court’s opinion issued January 17, judges cited forensic film analysis that proved the videos were “authentic and not deceptively edited.” This is huge!

Now, Texas and Planned Parenthood are back at the Fifth Circuit. This time the court is likely to decide whether or not Medicaid clients of Planned Parenthood can sue the state in a federal court. You see, instead of following the normal procedures for Medicaid providers who lose funding, Planned Parenthood tries to game the system by asking potential clients to sue the state in court.

That’s why today, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) filed a friend-of-the-court brief in support of Texas. In the brief, ADF attorneys argue that Texas had every right to halt Medicaid funding. Not only did Planned Parenthood break the law when it sold baby parts, it has been rife with waste, abuse, and fraud in Texas and across the nation for years.

Here are just a few of the many abuses highlighted in the brief:

  • Planned Parenthood locations across the country (including Texas) have been shown to have abused taxpayer dollars by overbilling Medicaid.
  • A 15-month investigation by the U.S. House of Representatives found evidence that Planned Parenthood violated several federal laws when it sold and transferred aborted baby parts.
  • In 2012, the federal government accused Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast (the branch of Planned Parenthood involved in the lawsuit) of abusing taxpayer dollars. Planned Parenthood paid a $4.3 million settlement.

Planned Parenthood’s record of waste, abuse, and fraud is clear. This should be enough reason for any state to stop sending money to the abortion giant. No American should be forced to fund an organization that has been caught trying to profit from baby body parts on film, and then lying about it. It’s time to take another step in defunding Planned Parenthood. Please keep this case in your prayers.
