Barronelle’s story

“As deeply fond as I am of Rob, my relationship with Jesus is everything to me. Without Christ, I can do nothing.”

Barronelle Stutzman’s continuing struggle for religious freedom should be alarming not only to Christians, but to every American who cherishes freedom.

Barronelle is a floral artist … and a grandmother. You’d never expect to see someone like her at the center of a firestorm. But she is being sued in both her professional and personal capacity by the Washington Attorney General and the ACLU.

If she loses, the ACLU could take everything she owns — her business, her home, and her life’s savings. Everything.

Barronelle just got some big news

For nearly a year, Barronelle has waited to see what the United States Supreme Court would do with her case. And now, they’ve finally addressed it.

In light of the recent win for cake artist Jack Phillips, the High Court has decided to send Barronelle’s case back to the Washington Supreme Court. The justices agree that her case, and the judgment against her, should be reconsidered based on the ruling in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case.

This is a pivotal moment. Barronelle needs your support now more than ever. With your help, Alliance Defending Freedom will continue to fight for Barronelle’s freedom—and yours.

Why has Barronelle been targeted?

It all began when a longtime friend and client, Rob Ingersoll, asked Barronelle to create custom floral arrangements for his same-sex wedding.

Barronelle had lovingly served Rob for many years. But she affirms the biblical teaching, as people across the globe and throughout history have, that marriage is the sacred union of a man and a woman. She could not help celebrate her friend’s wedding because it would violate her convictions. But she referred him to other excellent florists in the area.

“As deeply fond as I am of Rob, my relationship with Jesus is everything to me.
Without Christ I can do nothing.”

The threat to Barronelle’s religious freedom is a threat to your religious freedom.

If Barronelle loses, activists will likely use her case to threaten our religious freedom.

After Rob’s partner told Facebook friends about Barronelle’s decision, she began receiving hate mail, angry phone calls, and even death threats. The Washington Attorney General learned about the social media post and decided to sue Barronelle and use his massive resources to make an example of her.

Because of God’s provision and your faithful support, we were able to represent Barronelle all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

And now the High Court has decided what to do with her case.

The Supreme Court’s order in Barronelle’s case does three things:

  1. It granted Barronelle’s petition.
  2. It wiped out the Washington Supreme Court’s judgment against her.
  3. It sent her case back to the Washington courts and instructed them to reconsider the case in light of the Supreme Court’s decision in Jack Phillips’ Masterpiece Cakeshop case.

This is big news! The Washington Supreme Court had previously ruled that the government can force Barronelle to create artistic expression and participate in events that conflict with her faith.

Our nation has a long history of protecting the right of peaceful citizens to disagree. Yet the government is threatening Barronelle just because she has a different view on marriage than the state does.

We must stand together as opponents of religious freedom continue to try to punish Christians for their faith. And your support today could help turn the tide for Barronelle.

You can make a difference to help Barronelle get justice

Will you stand with Barronelle, and with Christians across the country who are being punished for their faith?

The cost of preparing for and litigating cases like this can be great. That’s particularly true here, because both the state and the ACLU have lawsuits against Barronelle.

Thanks be to God, a group of generous Ministry Friends have given a $300,000 challenge grant to help provide a strong legal defense for Barronelle and other Christians like her.

This means any gift you give today will have an even greater impact!

Please help as generously as you are able. Through your help, we are able to provide the strongest possible legal defense for Christians like Barronelle who are targeted for their faith.

When Christians stand together, pray together, and unite in action, we can defeat those who would deny us our religious freedom.

It is vitally important to persevere.

Please give now to help provide a strong legal defense in these critical cases. There’s more than just Barronelle’s religious freedom at stake here. As her attorney, ADF Senior Counsel Kristen Waggoner has said, if the Washington Supreme Court’s view of the law is correct, then freedom of conscience for “all citizens is fair game for the government.”

Your impact will be furthered by a challenge grant

Alliance Defending Freedom has established a strong record of success defending your religious freedom. In fact, Jack’s victory at the Supreme Court is the eighth victory at the Supreme Court that you’ve helped us secure in the last seven years! God is using you in mighty ways—thank you.

But your help is critically needed now. Because, for Barronelle and many others, the fight is not over.

God has shown us time and time again that when we stand together to protect religious freedom, we can be victorious. But protecting religious freedom isn’t “someone else’s fight.” It’s your fight. It’s our fight.

And your gift today will have even more impact thanks to the $300,000 challenge grant.

Please give generously today to defend Barronelle and to protect your religious freedom too.
