Is abortion a right? Should women everywhere be able to choose life or death for their babies? Unfortunately, President Joe Biden thinks so.
But his position on abortion goes even further than that. In fact, the Biden administration wants the U.S. (read: your taxpayer dollars) to fund international organizations that provide or promote abortions. And today, he made this a reality.
The Mexico City Policy
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan unveiled plans to expand the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 at the United Nations International Conference on Population, in Mexico City. Under the Foreign Assistance Act, foreign nongovernmental organizations were prohibited from using U.S. funds to provide abortions or from motivating anyone to perform an abortion. But the Reagan administration took this a step further.
“U.S. support for family planning programs is based on respect for human life, enhancement of human dignity, and strengthening of the family,” Reagan began. “The [new policy] statement directed the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to expand the limitation under the Foreign Assistance Act to prohibit a wide range of activities, including providing advice, counseling, or information regarding abortion, or lobbying a foreign government to legalize or make abortion available.”
The policy was then dubbed the Mexico City Policy and went into effect in 1985.
Since then, it has been enforced in all Republican administrations and rescinded in all Democratic ones, with the Trump administration having expanded its funding prohibitions even further.
As ADF said in a statement: “American taxpayer dollars have many good uses, but paying for elective abortions overseas is not and never has been one of them.”
The Biden Administration
More so than any previous administration, the Biden administration is intent on making sure abortion is widely and radically available—and plans on helping organizations like Planned Parenthood with your money.
As ADF General Counsel Kristen Waggoner wrote at Newsweek: “Biden has promised to enshrine the deeply flawed Roe v. Wade decision in federal law, and even to force pro-life Americans to subsidize abortions. These mandates mock the ideal of choice and reinforce the lie that a mom must be able to abort her baby to reach her full potential.”
It didn’t take President Biden long to fulfill that promise.
Stand for Freedom
The Biden administration believes that unborn lives are disposable and that they should be disposed of with taxpayer dollars—even outside of the United States.
But America was founded on the fundamental principles that all people are created equal and that we are endowed by our Creator with inalienable rights. If we fail to live up to our foundational principles for the smallest and most vulnerable, then those principles are in jeopardy for us all.
Right now, the American promises of life and liberty are at risk. And Alliance Defending Freedom stands ready to defend them—all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary.
But we can’t do it without you. Today, you can stand for freedom—and for the right to life for every American citizen, including the unborn.
Will you commit to standing for the promises upon which this nation was founded?
Every generation faces a unique moment when it is called on to protect the guarantee of liberty enshrined in our Constitution. This is our moment. This is your moment. Today, you can help defend the American promises of life and liberty.
If you believe these American promises are worth defending, please sign the statement.
- I stand for America’s founding principles: that all men are created equal with inalienable, God-given rights.
- I stand against any unlawful effort by the Biden administration to restrict my constitutional liberties.
- I stand for freedom and will join Alliance Defending Freedom to preserve free speech, religious freedom, the sanctity of life, parental rights, and marriage and family.
The Biden administration’s message is clear: conscience rights come second to radical gender ideology.
