Landmark Decision Upholds First Amendment Right for Americans

Lorie Smith rejoices after seven-year battle for free speech

On June 30, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in favor of free speech and graphic artist Lorie Smith in 303 Creative v. Elenis.

Praise God! This is a landmark victory upholding the First Amendment’s promise of free speech to all Americans.  Colorado can no longer misuse the law to coerce or silence speech.

The Supreme Court made clear that the First Amendment prevents the government from forcing Americans to say things they don’t believe.

As the Court wrote: “But, as this Court has long held, the opportunity to think for ourselves and to express those thoughts freely is among our most cherished liberties and part of what keeps our Republic strong.”

For seven years, Colorado-based graphic artist and custom website designer Lorie Smith has bravely stood against Colorado’s law that threatens to violate her First Amendment rights and coerce her to speak the government’s approved message.

Alliance Defending Freedom was by Lorie’s side every step of the way.

This is not just a win for Lorie, but a win for all Americans.  The promise of free speech is a basic human right essential to a flourishing democracy. And the Supreme Court affirmed that you don’t lose your freedom of speech when you enter the marketplace.

This landmark decision will benefit many of our other clients who are still standing for their God-given right to speak and express ideas consistent with their beliefs.

Cases like Lorie's that go all the way to our nation’s highest court can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. And Alliance Defending Freedom doesn’t charge our clients a dime to defend them in court. We depend upon the generosity of people like you.
