Adar v. Smith

Adar v. Smith

Summary

Two men who adopted a child in the state of New York demanded that a Louisiana State registrar, Darlene Smith, replace the name of the boy’s birth certificate. However, because Louisiana does not recognize unmarried couples as adoptive parents, she offered to list only one of the men’s names on the certificate. The men refused, and instead filed a lawsuit against Smith.
