Ohio governor signs conscience protections for medical professionals into law

Published
Gov. Mike DeWine

The following quote may be attributed to Alliance Defending Freedom Legal Counsel Stephanie Nichols regarding Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s approval of vital conscience protections for doctors, nurses, and other medical providers as an amendment to the state budget. These protections ensure that medical professionals and organizations cannot be forced to participate in healthcare services that violate their conscience:

“No American should be forced to violate their ethical and religious beliefs; doctors, nurses, and other medical providers are no different. The conscience protections included in the Ohio state budget ensure that no medical professional is compelled to breach their oath to ‘do no harm’ by being required to participate in procedures or treatments that violate their conscience. Driving out doctors, nurses, and other medical providers from their professions because of their faith means fewer healthcare options for patients at a time when our nation’s healthcare system is overstretched and experiencing a dire shortage of providers. We commend Gov. DeWine and the Ohio Legislature for providing more choices for patients by protecting the right of Ohio medical professionals—our healthcare heroes—to operate according to their ethical and religious beliefs.”
