Pursley v. Pennsylvania

Beware the Bias Investigators

Summary

James Pursley, a Christian and alumni of Pennsylvania State University, attempted to purchase a $250 brick for placement on the school's new Alumni Walk. Officials rejected his application because it included a request that a Scripture reference to "Joshua 24:15" be included. Penn State officials stated that their policy did not permit "religious messages" and that the reference "would not be in keeping with the intent of the walk." In 2008, ADF attorneys reached a settlement on behalf of Pursley, clearing the way for a brick containing his original message to be placed on the Alumni Walk.
