MT governor signs bill protecting speech for teachers, public servants

The following quote may be attributed to Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Matt Sharp, director of the ADF Center for Public Policy, regarding Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte’s signing Thursday of HB 400, a bill that prohibits government entities from forcing teachers, professors, and other public employees to use inaccurate pronouns in violation of their sincerely held beliefs:

“No one should lose their job or face punishment at work for declining to say something they believe is false. In no world is it acceptable for the government to force good educators or other public servants out of a job for the sake of promoting gender ideology. With this legislation, Montana is rightfully stepping into the gap to protect freedom of conscience. ADF commends Rep. Braxton Mitchell, Sen. Theresa Manzella, and the Montana Legislature for their leadership, and Gov. Gianforte for signing this legislation into law. We also thank the Montana Family Foundation for its monumental work on this effort. Freedom of speech and religion includes the freedom not to endorse messages contrary to one’s core beliefs, and protecting these essential pillars of freedom benefits all of society.”
