Summary
In December 2011, Texas Aggie Conservatives at Texas A&M University asked for student funding to help bring a well-known speaker to campus to discuss poverty, race, and social justice from a political and religious perspective. The university denied the request in February, saying funds couldn’t go to organizations classified under “social and political issues.” In fact, the policy shut out political and religious groups altogether, even as the university funded many other student organizations from money collected through student fees.
ADF attorneys filed suit in June 2012. By October, Texas A&M had agreed to revise the policy. Religious and political groups can now apply for funding the same way every other group does, under specific criteria and with an appeal process if they are denied, so ADF dismissed the suit in November 2012.
