Help Protect Yakima Union Gospel Mission’s Freedom to Spread the Gospel

What would happen to faith-based nonprofits like pregnancy resource centers or homeless shelters if the government stopped them from hiring only employees who agreed with and lived out the organization’s values?

According to two U.S. Supreme Court justices, “many non-profits would be extinguished from participation in public life.”

But a Washington state employment law is being used to threaten the work of religious ministries.

In 2021, the Washington Supreme Court ruled that religious organizations could be forced to hire people who disagree with, and refuse to live out, the ministries’ beliefs.

Now, Washington officials are using this law to force Yakima Union Gospel Mission, a Christian ministry dedicated to serving the homeless and sharing the Gospel, to hire people who oppose its mission.

For eight decades, the Mission has been feeding and clothing the homeless, as well as providing them with shelter and helping them get back up on their feet. But the goal of the mission is to bring the truth of the Gospel to the homeless. So, it’s crucial that the mission’s employees adhere to the Bible.

If the Mission violates Washington’s law, it faces punishment from the state—including costly lawsuits.

But you can help. Alliance Defending Freedom filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Mission to protect its constitutional right to hire those who agree with and live out its religious beliefs.

During its last fiscal year, the Mission provided shelter for nearly 1,000 people, gave away more than 130,000 meals, and reached over 500 homeless people with their outreach work. The Mission plays an important part of the community and to continue its work, it’s nonnegotiable that it be free to hire those who align with its faith-based values.

The government cannot be allowed to disrupt the Mission’s good work.
