Support Students’ Free Speech Rights
Please add my name in support of E.D. (name protected), a student who sought to share a pro-life message through a Students for Life of America club at her public school.
Students do not surrender their First Amendment freedoms when they enter a school building. The Constitution protects the right of young people to express their sincerely held beliefs—religious, political, or otherwise—without fear of censorship or retaliation.
E.D. followed her school’s procedures to start a student-interest club. She secured a faculty advisor, received approval, and invited her classmates to participate.
Yet when she sought approval for flyers promoting her club’s meeting, school officials rejected them because they contained a life-affirming message. Her club’s recognition was then revoked.
Public schools must remain places where diverse viewpoints can thrive. Government officials should not silence student speech simply because it addresses issues some may find controversial.
I support E.D.’s right—and the right of all students—to express their beliefs.
Free speech is not optional. It is foundational. I stand in support of E.D., her pro-life speech, and the constitutional freedoms she seeks to defend at the U.S. Supreme Court.
Signed,
