Protect Your Freedom of Speech

Who is Liam?

As a middle-school student in Middleborough, Massachusetts, Liam was punished by his school for wearing a t-shirt that says, “There are only two genders.”

Why what happened to Liam matters

Students don’t forfeit their free speech when they walk into school. It’s not just about a t-shirt—it’s about government officials telling a middle-schooler that he can’t say something that’s true just because they disapprove of what he said. That’s not freedom.

The school actively promotes its view about gender through posters and “Pride” events, and it encourages students to wear clothing with messages on the same topic—so long as that clothing expresses the school’s preferred views on the subject.

That’s not freedom. It’s censorship.

And if the government can silence Liam, it can silence any student about any important subject.

The school’s actions violate important freedoms

All students have the constitutional right to peacefully express their views without having to fear being pressured or punished by school officials. The Constitution says they can’t be forced out of the classroom for exercising their rights.

That’s why Alliance Defending Freedom and the Massachusetts Family Institute appealed Liam’s case to the U.S. Supreme Court. But the Supreme Court decided not to hear the case, leaving in place a lower court ruling which denied Liam his constitutional rights.
