Religious Charter Schools Not Welcome in Oklahoma? Let’s Change That!
St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School wants to be part of Oklahoma’s charter-school program, and it’s just as qualified as any non-religious charter school.
But because St. Isidore is religious, Oklahoma’s attorney general sued to exclude St. Isidore from the program.
The recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in Oklahoma Statewide Charter School Board v. Drummond—a 4-4 split—is a disappointment for Oklahoma families.
The ruling leaves in place an Oklahoma Supreme Court decision overriding our client, the charter school board’s, approval of St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School to participate in its charter school program. The Oklahoma Supreme Court won’t let St. Isidore participate in the program simply because it is religious.
For families who had been looking forward to sending their kids to St. Isidore, this is frustrating news. However, the decision did not resolve the underlying matter, allowing the court to revisit the issue in the future.
