Missouri Tells Supreme Court That Discrimination Against Churches Is Proper
The following quote may be attributed to Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Legal Counsel David Cortman regarding the state’s response brief filed June 28 in Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia v. Pauley:
“Every citizen, regardless of their beliefs, should be treated equally. But the state of Missouri’s primary argument is that its constitution actually requires discrimination against people of faith and religious organizations. But the reality is that both the state and federal constitutions require neutrality. The state can’t disqualify an organization that exceeded the requirements for participation in a generally-available government program merely because it's religious. No state or federal constitution should be interpreted to require hostility and discrimination against people of faith.”
Alliance Defending Freedom is an alliance-building, non-profit legal organization that advocates for the right of people to freely live out their faith.
