BRYAN, Texas — ADF Senior Legal Counsel Steven H. Aden will be available by phone for media interviews Tuesday following a hearing in the lawsuit Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas v. Johnson. Planned Parenthood filed the lawsuit after the director of its Bryan health center, Abby Johnson, quit her job after observing an abortion procedure. Planned Parenthood is seeking a temporary injunction to prohibit her from using records the abortion clinic falsely alleges she copied. ADF attorneys are providing legal assistance to Johnson and the Brazos Valley Coalition for Life in preparation for Tuesday’s hearing.

“This is just the latest national Planned Parenthood scandal,” said Aden. “This is not about one woman or one clinic. Planned Parenthood is a national organization that has been kept afloat by hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer funding. Planned Parenthood may go back to its denial playbook to try to marginalize Ms. Johnson, but the American people need to understand that this organization has been involved in scandal after scandal and has never owned up to these scandals.”

“Planned Parenthood isn’t interested in the health of women and girls. It exists to exploit vulnerable girls and women for profit,” Aden added. “An organization that is subsidized by the American people is answerable to the American people.”

In the official answer to the allegations filed against her, Johnson argues that she did not violate a confidentiality agreement and did not remove and copy documents at the clinic in the days before her resignation. Planned Parenthood falsely claims that Johnson is using information from the allegedly copied documents to bring harm to the organization and/or its employees.

Employed with Planned Parenthood for eight years, Johnson, the 2008 employee of the year for Planned Parenthood’s southeast Texas region, says she was put under duress by her employer in August when her clinic was economically pressured to perform more abortions to raise profits. After recently being required to assist in an ultrasound-guided abortion procedure which she observed on screen, Johnson decided to resign.

Johnson says she changed her view about abortion after seeing the pre-born child--of 13 weeks--in the ultrasound curl away from the abortion instrument inserted to end his or her life. She has since accepted employment with the Brazos Valley Coalition for Life, a community-based Christian pro-life organization.
