SAN DIEGO — Alliance Defense Fund Litigation Counsel Jeremy Tedesco will be available to answer questions from the media following a hearing tomorrow regarding a civil rights lawsuit filed against San Diego State University and California State University at Long Beach.
“The university should be a marketplace of ideas, not an institution for suppressing speech that is ‘unpopular’ with the academic elite,” Tedesco said. “The university officials are violating students’ First Amendment rights by requiring Christian organizations to accept members who disagree with their beliefs and viewpoints.”
ADF filed a civil rights lawsuit in November on behalf of four Christian student groups pressured by university officials to accept as members and leaders those who do not share their Christian beliefs. ADF’s clients include the chapters of Every Nation Campus Ministries at San Diego State University and California State University at Long Beach as well as fraternity Alpha Gamma Omega and sorority Alpha Delta Chi at San Diego State University. “The right of association applies to all groups on campus,” Tedesco explained. “All student groups have the right to elect officers and members who share that group’s beliefs and values.”
ADF is a legal alliance defending the right to hear and speak the Truth through strategy, training, funding, and litigation.
