Since 2013, Barronelle Stutzman has been standing for religious freedom. She was sued by the State of Washington and the ACLU for declining to create custom floral art celebrating a longtime customer and friend’s same-sex wedding. Unfortunately, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear her case. The case is heading back to the Washington trial court to litigate the amount of ACLU attorney fees Barronelle must pay, which could be seven figures. Barronelle and her husband, Darold, wanted to thank you for your support over the years.
A Thank You Note from Barronelle:
Thank you for your outpouring of concern about the Supreme Court’s decision to deny our case.
Your dedication is overwhelming, and we have been blessed beyond words.
Were we disappointed with the decision? Yes. Were we surprised by the decision? Yes. Did my heart break? Yes. Did I sob?
All along, my prayer has been that we accept God’s will, whatever it is, with thanksgiving and joy. I have gotten to the thanksgiving part; the joy part I’m still working on.
We have a sovereign God. He is the beginning and the end. Every knee shall bow, every tongue will confess.
The ADF team, including Ministry Friends like you, have become our family. You are loved and treasured beyond measure. We have become happily entwined in many of your lives and wouldn’t change that for a second. You bring us joy.
So just wanted to tell you: it’s okay. We are okay.
“Barronelle, we have won,” Darold said. “Not in the world’s eyes, but in God’s eyes … because we have been faithful.” What better way to end this case?
Take care and thank you for EVERYTHING.
A Thank You Note from Barronelle’s Husband, Darold:
Where does time go? We’ve been with ADF around eight years. It seems more like a lifetime.
The decision of the Supreme Court was a devastating loss for religious freedom, for our nation, for ADF, and for our family.
But, as Christians, we believe that our GOD is a sovereign GOD. He has to be in control of all things, or He is in control of nothing. God — in His wisdom and divine plan — chose us and gave us the opportunity to stand.
Sometimes, we wonder, “What are You thinking, GOD?” But GOD, in His infinite wisdom, does not bend His will to ours or take our advice.
GOD has His plan — and in spite of our wishes and desires, He didn’t change it. We did our best, we were obedient, and that is our responsibility.
Barronelle and I would like to personally thank you for all the support that you have given us through the years.
When Kristen Waggoner asked us if we were “sure we wanted to go through with it,” we really had no idea what “it” would turn out to be. Wow, what a journey.
Thank you so much for your never-ending generosity and kindness.
I know this journey is not over, and that you continue to fight. We will always be available, to do whatever we can do or be wherever we can be of help.
