Despite all the Left’s talk about “tolerance” and “dialogue,” they don’t seem to walk the walk.
Many left-wing universities have effectively silenced any conservative or non-liberal thinker from speaking on their campuses (think Milo Yiannopoulos, Heather Mac Donald, Charles Murray, Ann Coulter). The leader of the Democratic National Committee stated that pro-life Democrats are no longer welcome in the Democratic Party. Senator and former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders accused Russell Vought, the nominee for Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget, of Islamophobia because Russell believed (as all Christians do) that Jesus is the only way to salvation.
If you need further examples of the Left’s inability to compromise and dialogue, you need look no further than the repeal of HB2 in North Carolina this past spring. For those of you who haven’t followed this debacle, here’s the scoop:
Lights Out Tonight, Fans, There’s Trouble in the Heartland
March 23, 2016: HB2 was signed into law by then Governor Pat McCrory. This bill contained commonsense provisions that preserved privacy in locker rooms, restrooms, and changing areas by prohibiting members of the opposite biological sex from entering.
Threats, intimidations, bullying ensued.
Multiple activist CEOs of large corporations such as Starbucks, eBay, American Airlines, (see full list here) signed a letter directed to Gov. McCrory, claiming that HB2 was “discriminatory” and “bad for business.”
A few musicians like Bruce Springsteen refused to hold concerts in North Carolina, which financially hurt the venues, their employees, and local businesses who benefit from the concert crowds. Not to mention that Springsteen denied his fan base the chance to see him wax political – I mean, perform.
Perhaps one of the most influential and outspoken bullies during this time was the NCAA. It refused to host any of its championship events (including the ever-popular March Madness games) in the Tar Heel State as long as HB2 was in effect.
After former Gov. McCrory lost his re-election campaign in 2016, the left-wing bullies made sure to hold Governor-elect Roy Cooper’s feet to the fire. The NCAA issued another threat to the new North Carolina governor, asserting that the organization would continue to boycott the state until this law was repealed.
The governor heard the NCAA’s demands and relented. Both houses of the legislature, along with the governor, repealed HB2 on March 30, 2017 (though, still not to their complete satisfaction).
Tale as Old as Time? The Tenured, Unelected Policy Makers
These threats ring familiar. The NCAA doesn’t sit on the sidelines of politics – it’s been fully active on the court, using its incredible influence to sway political decisions in its favor.
Let’s recall March 2015, when now-Vice President Mike Pence was Governor of Indiana. As governor, Pence signed a Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) that essentially granted businesses and business owners the freedom to live out their conscience in the workplace. According to this law, Indiana residents could not be forced by the government to engage in conduct that violates their religious convictions. These laws are commonsense. They simply reinforce one of our founding freedoms: the freedom to live out your faith without governmental interference.
Cue the left-wing backlash. In the manner that is their modus operandi, the NCAA called foul and threatened to remove all championship games from the state, including the men’s Final Four championship game that was to be held in Indianapolis in the coming week. (Their headquarters is in Indiana - maybe they are just resentful that the Hoosiers haven’t won an NCAA championship game since 1987?)
Succumbing to the pressure, Gov. Pence signed a “fix” to the RFRA law that limited the protection for those business owners who want to live out their faith in the workplace.
I Don’t Know What’s Wrong with These Kids Today
The reason to revisit these events is to remember that history repeats itself. The Left will continue to use the power and influence they have to sway politics and policy.
Here at Alliance Defending Freedom, we value the fundamental freedoms that our Founders cherished – the freedom of religion and freedom of speech. That’s why we will continue to advocate for these constitutional principles when powerful, well-funded organizations like Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, and others try to intimidate policy makers into making bad law.
