Last Updated: 5/29/2020

Overview

Summary

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit reversed a dismissal of a lawsuit against Ohio's Miami University, ruling in favor of free speech. Jim Gilles, a Christian, attempted to preach a Christian message to passersby at MU. A security officer approached Gilles and a second man and stated that they would need a permit to exercise their free speech rights on campus. The men were threatened with arrest if they did not stop speaking.
