ADF letter to Provost Academy

Last Updated: 6/2/2020

Overview

Summary

After receiving a letter from ADF attorneys, a South Carolina school reversed course and allowed a student to include a Bible verse in her graduation speech after first telling her that she could not. Officials told Mariah Kirby that she could not use Proverbs 13:4, which reads, "The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied." Kirby was informed that she could not "use a religious quote because we are a public school."
