You would think that the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services would be required to respect life. This person should fight for the right to life of every American citizen—born or unborn—and do this while respecting the United States Constitution.
Unfortunately, the recently appointed HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra doesn’t check either of those (rather important) boxes.
Becerra has a long record of violating the Constitution and showing no regard for the value of life. In fact, Becerra displays so little regard for life that he has trampled on the First Amendment by attempting to force pro-life pregnancy centers to advertise abortions.
Becerra has proven himself hostile to the pro-life cause and has repeatedly shown that he will employ unconstitutional tactics to achieve his political agenda.
The Supreme Court Case NIFLA v. Becerra
For several years, as the Attorney General of California, Becerra defended an unconstitutional law forcing pro-life pregnancy centers to act against their conscience and promote abortion.
Under the law, all pro-life pregnancy centers had to post advertisements referring their clients to Planned Parenthood or other facilities that offer free or low-cost abortions. On top of that, nonmedical pregnancy centers (that give women free diapers, baby clothes, and other services that don’t require a medical license) had to post large disclosures in all of their ads letting women know of their nonmedical status, making them appear incompetent.
Becerra didn’t want women to choose life. Instead, he wanted women in California to believe abortion was the best and only option.
The government should never have the power to force people to speak against their beliefs. This is a direct violation of the First Amendment. That’s why Alliance Defending Freedom stepped in and filed a lawsuit on behalf of National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA). Watch what happened in the video below.
Government officials should serve the people and the Constitution—not special interest groups like Big Abortion. But Becerra’s history shows that he has his priorities all wrong.
He proved this in 2003 when he voted against a ban against partial birth abortion in Congress. He proved it when he opposed legislation that protected babies from abortion on the basis of their sex. He proved it when he prosecuted the journalists who exposed Planned Parenthood’s crime of selling aborted baby body parts. And he proved it when he forced pro-life pregnancy centers to advertise for abortion.
Becerra threatens the rights of every American citizen. He has shown a willingness to put the lives of the unborn in danger while sacrificing your freedoms to do it.
The Biden administration has made its intentions clear: your freedom is at risk.
