President Trump Halts Use of Taxpayer Dollars to Fund International Abortion

I am and will remain pro-life. Public funding of abortion providers is an insult to people of faith at the least, and is an affront to good government and governance, at best. I will work to support the dignity of human life from conception to natural, dignified death.

Those are the words from a September press release out of now-President Donald Trump’s campaign.

And it seems he is taking steps to make good on his promise to defend the sanctity of life. Today, President Trump signed an executive order reinstating the Mexico City Policy just a few short days after taking office.

Originally signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, the Mexico City Policy bans nongovernmental organizations from performing or promoting abortions internationally if they receive federal funding.

Makes sense, doesn’t it? Why should an organization like the International Planned Parenthood Federation receive U.S taxpayer dollars to commit abortions in foreign countries – or anywhere for that matter?

But historically, this has been an on-and-off-again policy. President Bill Clinton revoked it, President George W. Bush reinstated it, and President Barack Obama revoked it again in 2009. Now, President Trump has reinstated it once again, just a day after the anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

“American taxpayer dollars have many good uses, but paying for elective abortions overseas is not and never has been one of them,” said ADF Senior Counsel Steven H. Aden. “The president has done the right and logical thing in reinstating a policy that never should have been rescinded.”

And by the way, whoever decided that Planned Parenthood could be trusted with our hard-earned tax dollars anyway? Our recent report with the Charlotte Lozier Institute sure says otherwise.

Here are just a few examples of Planned Parenthood’s misuse of taxpayer dollars:

  • Nearly one in four Planned Parenthood businesses has been implicated in financial fraud or mismanagement
  • Planned Parenthood affiliates have been identified as the source of at least $12.8 million in waste, abuse, and potentially fraudulent overbilling and penalties
  • One audit uncovered $5.2 million in overbilling by two California Planned Parenthood affiliates

Is this an organization you want your taxpayer dollars going to? I know I don’t.

As it so happens, Congress recently recommended that Planned Parenthood be completely defunded. And this is certainly a step in the right direction.
