In Iowa, an Important Win for the Health of Women – and their Babies

October 17, 2017

Leave it to the abortionists to find new ways to make the horrible more horrific.

You may have heard about one of the latest developments implemented by Planned Parenthood in recent years – something called a “webcam” abortion. It enables these abortionists to cut costs (and increase profits) at its abortion clinics by cutting down on extraneous staff (like doctors and nurses) and equipment. In the process, though, they make these chemical abortions even more hazardous to the health of the often desperate and depressed women who come into their clinics seeking help, only to be persuaded to terminate the life in their womb.

With a webcam abortion, a woman is brought to an examination room, where she is briefly questioned by a doctor via closed-circuit television from a remote location. The doctor supposedly confirms her eligibility and desire for a chemical abortion, then has her push a button. A drawer pops open, and the doctor has her remove two pills from the drawer: one to take right then, the other later, at home. The pills precipitate her abortion. Planned Parenthood saves the expense of having a doctor or other licensed health care provider on site at each clinic, and often ignores FDA protocols that stipulate how these drugs are to be administered.

Meanwhile, the woman receives no firsthand examination, and has no recourse but an ER should anything go wrong after she takes the pill – as it often does. In 2011, the FDA reported at least 2,207 cases of severe adverse events, including hemorrhaging, blood loss requiring transfusion, serious infection, and 14 deaths from abortion drugs administered in violation of FDA protocols.

Alliance Defending Freedom is committed to the preservation of life in and out of the womb – so our concern over Planned Parenthood’s predisposition for making money at the cost of babies’ lives extends to outrage at the company’s often callous disregard for vulnerable women’s health.

That’s why our attorneys recently joined with the American Association of Pro-life Obstetricians and Gynecologists in sending a letter to the Iowa Board of Medicine – where the webcam abortions are particularly prevalent – in support of new standards that would eliminate these dangerous procedures. In response, the board voted on August 30 to ban all webcam abortions.

“American tax dollars should be used responsibly and for the common good,” says Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Michael J. Norton, “but instead taxpayers are funding organizations like Planned Parenthood that are involved in risky chemical abortion procedures. “

“No matter where one stands on abortion,” he adds, “all can agree that Planned Parenthood and other abortionists should be accountable to basic health and medical standards, and that at least includes a licensed professional personally meeting with women who are considering such a serious and potentially life-altering act. We commend the Iowa Board of Medicine for caring more about the health and safety of mothers than about the profits Planned Parenthood obtains through ‘webcam’ abortions.”

This is what it means to be committed to the sanctity of life: in working on behalf of even those women who are persuaded by Planned Parenthood to abort the child in their womb, we are able not only to help the women themselves, but to block a procedure that was rapidly making abortions themselves easier, more profitable for Planned Parenthood – and more prevalent. In helping us preserve the health of women, you’ve saved the lives of children.

Please be in faithful prayer for our attorneys, as they work so diligently to preserve life from the moment of conception to the grave … and to protect the religious liberties that allow you and I to share our faith with those who yearn for life beyond even death itself.

Dobbs Roe v. Wade
What You Need to Know About One of the Biggest Abortion Cases Since Roe v. Wade

The reality is that our federal abortion laws are stuck in the past. So, it makes sense that Mississippi would want its state law to reflect our modern scientific knowledge.

Sanctity of Life
This New Bill Could Mandate Unrestricted Access to Abortion

While claiming to protect women’s health, this legislation fails to acknowledge the physical and mental toll abortion has on women—to say nothing of the unborn female lives being aborted.

This adds another bold pro-abortion move to the list of egregious actions taken by President Biden.
