Planned Parenthood is certainly putting its network of abortion cronies to work in California.
In 2014, the California Department of Managed Healthcare (DMHC) sent a letter to health insurers in the State of California, informing them that they would be required to cover abortions in their healthcare plans – including elective abortions. They claimed that abortions fall under the category of “basic health care services.”
This came as a surprise to churches and religious organizations across the state. No new regulation had been passed. And DMHC had not even opened the question to public comment.
But it was not a surprise to Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthood and other abortion advocates had closed-door meetings and off-the-record conversations with DMHC officials. Then the letters went out.
In California, churches and other religious organizations had been free to exclude or limit abortion coverage. These churches and religious organizations believe that human life is worth defending, at every stage. And being forced to fund abortions undermines their beliefs.
But now they are left with the choice of either paying for abortions or dropping healthcare coverage for their employees – an impossible choice.
Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is representing three churches in a lawsuit against the state. When these churches learned that their employee health care plans were suddenly required to cover elective abortions, they knew they had to fight to preserve their right to operate consistently with their beliefs. Unfortunately, a federal court dismissed the case, but we will not back down. On Monday, ADF filed an amended complaint on behalf of these churches.
ADF is also representing Skyline Church in San Diego in a separate lawsuit against the state.
Planned Parenthood has shown time after time that they are highly motivated by profit – much of which comes from abortions. And, obviously, they are happy to trample on the constitutional rights of others to make sure their bottom line is secure.
They ensure that those in the government bend to their will so that they continue receiving taxpayer money – $500 million worth of it. And they keep those in power they know will help protect their abortion gold mine.
This is not the only policy they have worked to put in place in California.
- In 2016, Planned Parenthood worked with the then-California Attorney General Kamala Harris to pass a law that would silence “undercover journalists” such as David Daleiden, who was behind the videos exposing Planned Parenthood for selling baby body parts in 2015.
- Planned Parenthood supported a law that forces pro-life pregnancy centers to promote abortion by posting a website and phone number where women can call to find out how to get free, state-funded abortions. Representing the National Institution of Family and Life Advocates at the Supreme Court, ADF is challenging this law.
- And they also supported a bill that California Governor Jerry Brown recently vetoed, which would have kept churches and religious and pro-life organizations from having a code of conduct consistent with their beliefs on abortion and sexual behavior.
But Planned Parenthood will gladly cross the constitutional lines to protect their bottom line.
And ADF will continue to stand for these groups’ constitutional rights to ensure that they are permitted to live consistently with their beliefs.

Forcing a church to hire an employee that doesn’t share its beliefs would be like forcing a Democratic candidate to hire a Republican speechwriter.
