Good News in the Ongoing Struggle to Preserve Life and Liberty

It’s okay to hope.

Sometimes, it almost seems like we think that, because we face so many challenges and conflicts, so many legal fights and setbacks, we must go about grim-faced, and talk only of the dangers and threats and evils abounding.

But we’re fighting a fight we not only know we can win, but will win – by the Lord’s grace and in His strength. In the epic spiritual struggle between good and evil, good is still the better-than-odds-on favorite. Our God doesn’t start anything He can’t finish. And day by day, He gives us encouragement and inspires us with victories and opportunities that not only give us joy amid particular conflicts … but also a glimpse of the ultimate Victory one day to come.

With that in mind, some good news from the last few weeks:

Abortion-Pill Mandate Scorecard

From the epicenter of a titanic legal battle, Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys have been keeping a scorecard on the ongoing struggle between the Obama administration’s efforts to enforce its abortion pill mandate and the efforts of Christian schools, businesses, and ministries to resist it.

The mandate is designed to force most employers – regardless of their religious or moral convictions – to provide insurance coverage for abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization, and contraception or face heavy penalties from the Internal Revenue Service. For many of us, the very idea of a mandate is a pretty bizarre concept in America. How blatantly does this one violate the most basic constitutional protections for religious freedom?

Blatantly enough that, as of this month, federal judges across the country (appointed by every recent president of both parties) have ruled 72-16 in favor of those resisting the mandate. And one of those cases is likely to be heard soon by the U.S. Supreme Court.

“Just as the Supreme Court rejected the mandate in the case of family businesses like Conestoga Wood Specialties and Hobby Lobby,” said ADF Senior Legal Counsel Matt Bowman, “it should reject the administration’s attempt to foist it on non-profit groups like faith-based charities, Christian colleges and universities, and pro-life advocacy organizations.”

ADF Report Details Planned Parenthood Failing to Report Sexual Abuse

On September 3, ADF issued a report documenting multiple instances of Planned Parenthood performing abortions on sexually abused minors and failing to report the rapes to authorities, as required by law. The report confirmed that affiliates of Planned Parenthood Federation of America instead accepted money for the abortions and allowed the rapists to roam free without any notification to the proper authorities as required by law.

The report presents a clear pattern of Planned Parenthood incidents involving sexually abused minors in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Minnesota, and Ohio. More than that, it “adds to the growing mountain of information that makes defunding Planned Parenthood a clear priority,” says ADF Senior Counsel and former U.S. Attorney Michael J. Norton. “Thousands of qualified community health centers are available that can be trusted with our hard-earned money. Planned Parenthood has proven for decades that it can’t be trusted. The only thing it’s entitled to is a federal investigation.”

Casey Mattox Testifies before Congressional Subcommittee

That investigation is now underway. On September 17, ADF Senior Counsel Casey Mattox testified before a Congressional subcommittee on the illegal practices of Planned Parenthood. The House Energy and Commerce Committee Subcommittee on Health is weighing amendments to Medicaid law to reaffirm that states may terminate their support for Planned Parenthood.  Mattox provided expert testimony supporting the growing conviction, among many, that states should be able to defund Planned Parenthood for any reason whatsoever.

“American taxpayer money should be redirected to the 13,000 federally qualified health center and rural health clinic locations that actually care for women and families,” Mattox told the committee. “Planned Parenthood made a $127 million profit off of American taxpayers last year and has now been caught on camera negotiating the sale of hearts, lungs, and livers from aborted babies,” said Mattox. “Planned Parenthood has proven for decades that it can’t be trusted, with scandals ranging from misusing taxpayer dollars in their billing practices, to failing to report statutory rape, or trafficking of baby parts. No organization like this is entitled to public funding.” (See #DefundPP for more details.)

Members of the subcommittee drew extensively on ADF research, charts and maps, pointed questions, and clear messaging in addressing their own concerns and outrage over Planned Parenthood’s brutal activities and disregard for the law, the safety of women, and the sanctity of human life.

Take Action

Please join us in rejoicing in these God-given victories and opportunities to speak truth to power, and reference them in reminding your family, friends, and fellow church members that there is always cause for hope when we work together for His glory and His purposes. And be in prayer for our ADF staff and allied attorneys, as they continue their tireless efforts to defend life, protect families, and preserve religious freedom in America and around the world.

This New Bill Could Mandate Unrestricted Access to Abortion

While claiming to protect women’s health, this legislation fails to acknowledge the physical and mental toll abortion has on women—to say nothing of the unborn female lives being aborted.
