Who Will Answer the Call?
With the death of Dr. James Kennedy in the autumn of 2007, Dr. James Dobson became the last surviving member of that remarkable group of key religious leaders who, in 1994, founded the Alliance Defense Fund. From that thoughtful vantage point, the founder and chairman of the board of Focus on the Family recently reflected on the passing of his generation of leadership, and the responsibilities to be assumed by the next generation – including ADF and its allies.
Who will answer the call?
When I was a kid, ministers talked often about “the call” – the call from the Lord to His special service. My own father heard that call very clearly as a young man, and resisted it – painfully – for many years. When he finally yielded, and gave his heart to the Lord, it transformed everything.
He reached tens of thousands of people through his ministry … and one of them was a little tow-headed kid named Jimmy. I wouldn’t be here – Focus on the Family wouldn’t be here – if my dad hadn’t answered the call.
I wonder who is listening for that call today. So many leaders who have been used mightily by the Lord in the past 40 or 50 years are about to hand the mantle down to the next generation … it causes me to wonder, Who will be here to carry the banner, when this generation of leaders is gone?
Who will defend the unborn child?
Who will plead for the Terri Schiavos of the world, who can be starved to death legally, for having the misfortune of being disabled?
Who’s going to fight for the institution of marriage, which is on the ropes today?
Who will be willing to take the heat, when it’s so much safer and more comfortable to avoid the controversial subjects? Who’s going to defend traditional morality, in a culture that’s sliding into moral decline?
Well, I’m thankful to say that among those heeding the call of God in these critical arenas are Alan Sears and the people of the Alliance Defense Fund.
For 14 years now, this unique legal ministry has been embracing the cases that too many Christians, for too many years, tried to avoid. ADF defends the sanctity of every life from conception to death, fights to preserve marriage and the family, and stands boldly against the myriad threats to religious liberty that are assaulting our faith from coast to coast.
Through prayer and God’s direct intervention, and through the contributions and sacrifice of His faithful people, ADF is winning victory after victory in the federal judiciary, many times in the U.S. Supreme Court. I have no idea where this country would be if not for the dedication, the determination, and the ability of Alan Sears and the ADF team.
I pray that the Lord will anoint more like them … courageous men and women who will never waver one inch in the defense of righteousness. And I believe we’re going to see these new leaders emerge in the next few years, and that the mantle of leadership will be assumed by those who are willing to die, if necessary, to defend biblical truth.
