BLOGNews You Should Know: Freedoms Gained and Freedoms Threatened

By Michael Farris, Jr. Posted on: | May 10, 2019

At a recent National Day of Prayer event, President Donald Trump announced a new U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) rule that reaffirms and expands federal protections for the religious freedom of medical professionals who stand up for life. And speaking of standing up for life, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp recently signed a heartbeat bill that protects the unborn after six weeks. Meanwhile, a funeral home owner is under attack for his dress code, and a high school athlete speaks out against allowing biological males compete in girls’ sports. All of this from the Alliance Alert team.

The Daily Caller: Bureaucrats Shouldn’t Be Involved In Gender Politics At Funeral Homes

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has gone too far—in more ways than one. ADF Senior Vice President Kristen Waggoner writes how the EEOC, which is charged with enforcing laws, is attempting to re-write federal law by targeting a funeral home owner whose dress code prohibits male employees from wearing female clothing while working with bereaved families. Waggoner says that, no matter where you stand on gender identity issues, everyone should be troubled by the actions of the EEOC trying to bypass Congress.

Politico: Trump strengthens protections for religious health workers

During a National Day of Prayer event, President Donald Trump announced that his administration protects the conscience rights of medical workers, faith-based adoption and foster care providers, and more. March for Life president Jeanne Mancini praised the announcement, saying, “No one should be forced to participate in life-ending procedures like abortion or similar activities that go against their religious beliefs or moral convictions.”

The Daily Signal: 8th Place: A High School Girl’s Life After Transgender Students Join Her Sport

If you want to know the impact the so-called Equality Act will have, look at high school girls' sports in Connecticut. Selina Soule, a 16-year-old runner, lost the opportunity to compete for the regional championship—and display her talents before numerous college coaches—after finishing in 8th place. Only the first six placing runners would go to the regionals. The kicker, though, is that the top two spots in her race were taken by biological males, meaning she missed the championship due to the unfair advantage boys have over girls. She is speaking out against biological boys competing in girls' sports at the same time that Nancy Pelosi is seeking to pass legislation that would erase Selina's voice.

WORLD: Georgia governor signs heartbeat law

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp recently signed a bill that outlaws abortion once the heartbeat of the baby in the womb is detected. The bill was heavily criticized by prominent figures in the film industry, which some feared would negatively impact the film industry's use of the state for filming locations. However, Gov. Kemp chose to protect unborn life over the rhetoric of Hollywood and signed the bill. The ACLU stated that it plans to challenge the law before it goes into effect in January 2020.
