BLOG3 Mothers Making Sacrifices for a Better Future

By Sarah Kramer Posted on: | May 11, 2018

On Mother’s Day, we want to take a moment and thank the mothers out there for the countless sacrifices they have made in raising their children.

It’s easy to overlook the daily sacrifices our mothers make for us. Sometimes, it’s as simple as giving up the last helping at a meal when she really wanted it. Other times, it’s sacrificing a hobby or her time. I think of how often my mom dropped – and still drops – everything to help me solve a problem or simply listen. I think of how she drove us several hours every night just so we could go to swim practice, or how she jumped back into working full time to help me pay for college.

Here at Alliance Defending Freedom, we are honored to stand with several mothers who are fighting to secure religious freedom for their children and for the rest of us.

Lynn Stormans

Ken Stormans, along with his wife Lynn, ran two family-owned grocery stores in  Olympia, Washington until he retired in 2007, passing it on to his three children. Ken and Lynn raised their children on the principles of first, serving the Lord, and second, serving the community. In 2006, they received a call asking them whether they stocked Plan B, an early abortifacient drug. Shortly after, they received a number of similar calls. The Stormans later learned that these inquiries were from abortion activist test shoppers.  At the time, activists and the governor were pressuring the state’s pharmacy commission to pass a regulation requiring pharmacy owners to sell Plan B. After the governor threatened to replace commissioners, the commission eventually passed the regulation and launched an investigation against the Stormans family.  The family was forced either to sell Plan B in violation of their conscience or to file a lawsuit with ADF’s help.

“We’re talking about our Constitution,” says Lynn, “about the freedoms that were guaranteed to us, first by God, then our country and our state. And we decided, ‘Yes, our country means enough to us, our God means enough to us, that we’re going to do this. We’re going to stand.’”

Katy Faust

Katy Faust grew up in a household with two moms. While Katy would be the first to say that it was a low-conflict, loving home, she still needed her father. Once Katy got married and had a family of her own, she realized that what a married mother and father give to their children is irreplaceable and uniquely valuable. In spite of harsh opposition, Katy is sharing her experience of growing up in a same-sex household in order to help others understand that children deserve to grow up with their mother and father whenever possible.

“Now, I’m a mom. And I see my kids with their father,” Katy says. “The way my kids connect and love us is different and beautiful and wonderful, and it’s such an injustice to say that kids are fine without one or the other.”

Barronelle Stutzman

Barronelle Stutzman is a mother and grandmother who is fighting for the freedom to live and work according to her deeply held religious beliefs. Barronelle faces the loss of everything she owns, as the State of Washington and the ACLU are suing her both personally and professionally, simply because she politely declined to use her artistic talents to create floral arrangements to celebrate a same-sex wedding ceremony. ADF is working to defend Barronelle’s right not just to hold but to actually live out her faith.

“It’s not about the money,” Barronelle says. “It’s about freedom. It’s about my 8 kids and our 23 grandchildren and the future and now. There’s not a price on freedom – you can’t buy my freedom.”

Thank you, mothers, for everything you do.
Join us in praying for these three mothers and the countless other mothers who are striving to do what is best for their children.
