BLOGIs Religious Freedom President Trump's "First Priority?"

By Bob Trent Posted on: | February 06, 2017

After much build up, rumor, and speculation, President Donald J. Trump has announced that Judge Neil Gorsuch is his pick to fill the current opening on the United States Supreme Court.

Judge Gorsuch has been a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit for 10 years. He was nominated to the appeals court by President George W. Bush in May 2006 and confirmed two months later by a unanimous voice vote. The American Bar Association rated him as "unanimously well qualified" at the time.

His career has also included prior work at the United States Supreme Court. Soon after graduating from Harvard Law School in the early 1990s, he clerked for both Justices Byron White and Anthony Kennedy. If Judge Gorsuch is confirmed this will be the first time a former clerk of a Supreme Court Justice will serve as a Justice alongside him as well.

ADF Legal Counsel Kellie Fiedorek joins Freedom Matters to provide some insight into the Supreme Court Nominee.

Also on this episode of Freedom Matters, we discuss the possibility of an executive order on religious liberty.

A draft document has emerged suggesting that President Trump is considering making good on his campaign promise to make protecting religious liberty his administration's “first priority.” As it is written, the order would roll back much of the harm the past eight years have done to American’s first freedom and restore protection for religious liberty to constitutional norms.

And, finally, we could see a new era of cultural engagement from pastors across the country.

The Free Speech Fairness Act, a bill that Rep. Jody Hice, R-Ga. and Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., introduced last week would restrict enforcement of the Johnson Amendment against churches and other non-profit groups for whom the law was never intended. The tax law allows the IRS to threaten the non-profit status of churches for speech the government agency deems political in nature.

The existence of the Johnson Amendment has resulted in a silencing of churches and nonprofits, ending the long tradition in America of pastors preaching biblical truth about political topics and issues.
