BLOGBREAKING: Mississippians Free to “Live and Let Live”

By Katie Heller Posted on: | April 05, 2016

Today, Mississippi governor Phil Bryant signed HB 1523, the Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act, which protects schools, churches, businesses, and public employees from government discrimination based on moral and religious beliefs concerning marriage and human sexuality. This commonsense bill, which received overwhelming support in a recent Mason-Dixon poll, affirms the freedom of all people to peacefully live and work according to their deeply held beliefs.

What this bill doesn’t do is create a “license to discriminate” – as it has been falsely characterized – in services like housing and dining, as Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) Legal Counsel Matt Sharp outlines.

“We commend the governor for signing into law protections for schools, churches, businesses, and public employees so that they won’t face government discrimination,” said ADF Legal Counsel Kellie Fiedorek. “After all, you’re not free if your beliefs are confined to your mind. What makes America unique is our freedom to peacefully live out those beliefs, and the Constitution protects that freedom.”

Thank you, Governor Bryant for your courage to protect the freedom of all Mississippians!
