BLOGThis Lent, Don’t Give Up – Get Involved

By Katie Heller Posted on: | February 10, 2016

Today, Christians across the globe begin a Lenten journey through a season of prayer, fasting, and alms-giving—a spiritual journey in preparation for the Resurrection of Christ. During this time, we ask God to purge us of what is taking His rightful place in our lives, we draw nearer to Him in daily prayer, and we seek out extra ways to serve and give to those most in need.

For me this year, Lent couldn’t come at a better time.

As I look at our country’s current state of affairs, I’m overwhelmed and discouraged by what I see.

I’ve wondered in recent days if the ministry I‘ve been called to do will help change a culture that is rapidly shoving God out the nearest exit door. But, despite the gloomy picture, I haven’t lost hope. I know God is moving. I know He has a plan. I’m certain that God’s ways are not my ways, and He works all things for good. In that, I find comfort and the strength to continue another day.

In Lents past, I’ve given up things like soda, sweets, social media, and screens. Fasting from many of those things has brought about good spiritual fruit, but as I’ve prayed about what to give up this Lent, I decided that I was going to do something instead—pray for our country.

The battle for religious freedom, marriage and family, and the sanctity of life requires more than just my (and all of our) occasional sideline cheers. It demands that I take action, risk something, and make a sacrifice for a greater good.

I think about Moses and how he pleaded with God to spare the Israelites. No, I don’t think God wants to wipe us out of existence, but I do believe, as Moses has shown us, that interceding on our country’s behalf can change its downward direction.

For the next 40 days, I offer you the same challenge: Don’t sit on the sidelines this Lent.  Make a choice to do something—to work daily to bring about a new springtime of faith in our country.

Here are a few suggestions of actions you can take:

  • Pray daily for all those who oppose religious freedom, traditional marriage, and the sanctity of life.
  • Strengthen your own marriage through a devotional or by attending an event and comfort someone whose marriage is failing.
  • Pray outside a local abortion facility for the mothers, unborn babies, and workers, and boldly ask God to close it. (Need some inspiration? Meet Eleanor!)
  • Make an extra financial sacrifice to support organizations that are working to uphold the right to freely live out your faith.
  • Pick one day per week to fast and intercede for the upcoming presidential election.
  • Pray daily for people like Barronelle, Jack, Kelvin, and the Stormans, who are currently in legal battles for their right to live out their faith.
  • Organize an event at your local church to pray specifically for our country.
  • Contact your congressional representatives and thank them for their service to the country and encourage them to seek God in all their decisions and votes.

As you journey through Lent, let us know how it’s going! Send us a note on Facebook or Twitter.

I’ll be praying for you!
