Today, the U.S. Supreme Court decided not to review a federal appeals court decision that tossed out the North Carolina Women’s Right to Know Act, which required abortionists to show a mother the ultrasound image of her baby before an abortion and to offer her the opportunity to hear the baby’s heartbeat. In arguing that the Court should take the case, North Carolina’s attorney explained that 24 states already have similar laws on the books.
The case, Walker-McGill v. Stuart, sought review from a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Richmond. Not surprisingly, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards saw the Court’s decision to not review the case as a “major victory for women,” but we know that’s not true.
Planned Parenthood needs to get out of the dark ages.
Women deserve more information, not less. While there seems to be some debate regarding what percentage of women who see an ultrasound of their child opt to let the baby live (some say as high as 90%, while others say the number is somewhere around 70%), it seems true that the great majority of women who see an image of their child carry their baby to term. Planned Parenthood knows this, which is precisely why they vigorously oppose a woman’s right to know. They want to keep women uninformed on abortion so women make decisions that improve Planned Parenthood’s bottom line.
For an organization that is supposedly built on a philosophy of “helping” women, it seems abhorrent that they would take the backwards stance that getting true information about the human life inside their bodies is somehow a bad thing. Might it change their minds? Of course, information often does! That is precisely the point of information, so that we might make the best decision based on what is known.
But Cecile Richards asserts that offering a woman information regarding abortion “interfere[s] in a woman’s personal medical decision about abortion.” The only interference here is the dangerous blockade to information that Planned Parenthood has put up between women and the truth.
And that just builds on Planned Parenthood’s long record of jeopardizing the lives of women and children.
