Steven H. Aden, Esq., serves as senior counsel with Alliance Defending Freedom, where he is director of the Center for Life Alliances.
Since joining ADF in 2008, Aden has focused his litigation efforts on the sanctity of human life, free speech on public university campuses, and the constitutionality of faith-based initiatives.
A champion for life, Aden has worked closely with the attorneys general of numerous states, winning key decisions against Planned Parenthood and other abortion proponents. As lead counsel on behalf of the Missouri health director in Planned Parenthood v. Missouri Health Department, he secured the state’s right to regulate chemical abortion and provide basic health and safety standards for abortion sellers. In Planned Parenthood v. Horne, he successfully argued that the Arizona State Constitution does not contain a “fundamental right to abortion” and secured protections both for parents of young girls who are considering abortion and for the conscience rights of healthcare workers. Aden also served as counsel to the Louisiana health director, turning back a pro-abortion legal attack on the authority of the state to close the most dangerous abortion clinics. These rulings have ended abortion at numerous clinics, saving many lives.
Aden earned his J.D. in 1989 from Georgetown University Law Center, graduating cum laude. He is admitted to the bars of the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Hawaii (inactive). He is a member of the bars of the U.S. Supreme Court and numerous federal circuit and district courts. Aden has also authored numerous law review articles on constitutional law and civil rights, and is a frequent media commentator.
